Before training as a psychotherapist, I was an organizational development consultant—in Melbourne, Australia—specializing in leadership development. For over a decade, I coached managers, leaders and executives to become more authentic and adaptable, and to develop and sustain open, honest, genuine, trust-based working relationships with their colleagues and team members.

 

It is no secret, or surprise, that the capacity to build and sustain healthy relationships is the foundation of
all thriving human systems, including: partnerships, families, groups, teams, organizations, communities, societies and nations.

In order to develop and foster robust working relationships with colleagues and team members one must first develop a healthy relationship with one’s self, with one’s own interior.  A fellow participant at an Authentic Leadership in Action (ALIA) summer intensive said it this way: You can’t clean the floor with a dirty mop.  Authentic, effective leadership requires self-awareness, integrity, humility and a willingness to bring the whole of you to your leadership role.
