Marvellous Men at Work

libbykostromin

Earlier this year, via Tami Simons’ Sounds True podcast, I was introduced to Edmonton-born Connor Beaton, the founder of ManTalks; an international organization dedicated to the personal and professional growth of men. The interview was an inspiring reminder of the challenges and opportunities of masculinity, as well as the delightful exploration of a wonderful human being. The goal of the work, as Beaton puts it, “not only to become a better man, but a better participant in the collective enterprise of living”.

Beaton comes across as open, balanced, genuine and brave. He speaks from personal experience and through an abiding curiosity in the experiences and wisdom of others. In articulating the work that is required to address the psychological and emotional wounds that many men face, he acknowledges how difficult it can be for men to seek help through therapy or coaching or meaningful connections — especially with other men.

Delving into my own reflections on empowered masculinity in our culture, I recalled the impact that (Australian author) Steve Biddulph’s book Manhood had, on me, many years ago; offering, as it did, a window into somewhat unfamiliar terrain. Later, as part of my own spiritual exploration and awakening I found myself warmly provoked and inspired by David Deida’s writings on male and female sexual and spiritual growth.

As an organizational development consultant and leadership coach I thoroughly enjoyed working with men; individually and in groups, both as clients and colleagues. I remain grateful for their help in honing my ability to forge connection through candor, reasoned enquiry and, above all, humor; elements that continue to frequent my sessions with counselling clients these days.
